During her time on Love & Hip Hop: New York (2011), Cardi B pursued her music aspirations as a regular cast member. The two mixtapes Cardi B released before signing with Atlantic Records in 2017 were Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1 (2016) and Vol. 2 (2017).
